The Unitarian religion began in the 1500s in Transylvaniaafter the Protestant Reformation when a group of theologists defined the deity as a “unity” rather than the previously called “trinity.” It was quite remarkable when its doctrine embraced a whole spectrum of believers, from those of all faiths to the agnostics and atheists. Some two or three decades ago, when the political atmosphere in Transylvania (now part of Romania) threatened the Unitarians still in Transylvania, the Unitarian-Universalists’ headquarters in Boston created a “partner church” program where some individual Unitarian Churches in America took a partner church in Transylvania, and through joint visits and financial assistance helped their partner church. The UnitarianChurchin Westport, CT, became the partner church to that of the small villageof Alsoboldogfalvain Transylvaniaand sponsored a trip to it. Some ten persons traveled together to spend ten days in Alsoboldogflava, and one of its members, Sumner Jules Glimcher, went along and recorded the trip. This documentary is a record of that event. This film is a turning back of the clock to one hundred years ago and how people in this village lived as most Americans did around the year 1900. The travelers also visited the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the person who became the model for Dracula. We see the primitive traffic jams of fifty cows each morning and afternoon as they travel to the nearby hills for forage; the horses and wagons before the arrival of the automobile, and the simple life of an agricultural community. The film concludes with a visit to a nearby gypsy community as they party and dance on a locals hillside. Interviews with locals show a lifestyle long disappeared in the USA.
Sumner Jules Glimcher, now professor emeritus from NYU, began his career as a page at NBC after graduating from college and spent his first six years there in a variety of jobs ranging from production manager to assistant director to manager of network operations. He then spent three years in Munichat Radio Free Europe, returned to the USand created the first independent voiced international news service, the precursor of CNN. He became manager of foreign news for WOR & RKO General; associate producer in charge of international acquisitions at NET (National Educational Television, the precursor of PBS); manager of the Center for Mass Communication at ColumbiaUniversity; and president of Mass Communications, Inc. In 1988 he was appointed director of the Department of Film, Video & Broadcasting at NYU’s Schoolof Continuing Education, and served until his early retirement in 1996. He then started a new company, Westminster Productions, Inc., dedicated to creating independent documentaries, and has produced a number of new films since then. His academic career also included service as deputy chair of the Department of Film at ColumbiaUniversity’s GraduateSchoolof the Arts for ten years, and he also taught for one year at Harvard, his alma mater. His textbook, MOVIE MAKING: A Guide to Film Production, was adopted at a number of universities and became a best seller. He served the president of Harvard as a film consultant, and was also a consultant to the United Nations, and for twenty years, to the Consulate General of Japan. He lectures on luxury cruise liners, and has given his workshop “How to Create a Documentary of Your Cruise” on eleven major cruise liners in the past few years. His films have been awarded more than three dozen major national and international awards.
