We are thrilled to present
the original GREY GARDENS, produced by Albert & David
Maysles, which is the basis of the musical now appearing on Broadway, and the
Hollywood feature, now in production. GREY GARDENS is a ninety-minute
feature documentary of a mother-daughter relationship- the mother, Edith
Bouvier-Beale, age 78, and her daughter, also Edith, age 56. Eccentric recluses,
they hadn’t left their house in 20 years. The house was in disrepair- a
decaying, run down mansion in East
Hampton
with half-a-dozen cats and several raccoons. As Bouviers, they had felt tied
down to the confines of an American aristocratic family. As recluses, they could
sing and dance, reminisce and, in sum, just be themselves. In the documentary,
their lives appear to be so fascinating there is a Broadway musical based on
“Grey Gardens” as well as a
Hollywood film in the making starring
Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore. The documentary has been shown successfully
theatrically (one review praised the two women for “trusting the vulnerability
of just being themselves”). Both Edies adored the film, the daughter describing
it as a classic and the mother, (2 years later) on her deathbed uttering her
last words, “There’s nothing more to say; it’s all in the film.” Some critics
were shocked by the openness and non-conformity of the two women; but both the
subjects and the filmmakers had to agree with the London Times when it described
the film as “Extraordinary. One of the oddest, most beautiful films
ever.”
