A Taste of Provence: Art, Culture & History
“A
Taste of Provence: Art, Culture &
History” Filmmaker
Sumner Jules Glimcher rented a villa for the month of July 2005, just outside
Aix-en-Provence and drove 3,500 km to visit and film some of the most stunning
towns, villages, and historical sites in Provence. The film shows excerpts from
Mozart’s “Cosi fan Tutti,” as well
as a performance of a group called, “Aix-en-Baroque,” which featured a program
of 18th Century French Motets by Andre Campra. The documentary also
shows a Vivaldi concert, a rock band on Bastille Day, a gypsy band in
Aigue-Mortes, and various street musicians. There are sequences featuring Paul
Cezanne’s and Vincent van Gogh’s lives and works. We also see Marseille and, of
course, La Camargue, where wild bulls forage along with the ‘Cheval Blanc,’ the
white horses that date to pre-history. Food, local markets, and Provencal
cuisine are prominently featured.
