The war to end all wars didn’t as December 7th seventy years ago and too many other dates have demonstrated. This film (this time we really have a print with a picture) directed by Frank Lloyd and starring Clive Brook and Diana Wynward won three Academy Awards in 1933. For best picture, best director and best art direction. It traces the lives of two different families (pre “upstairs – downstairs”) over three decades, from the Boer War at the close of the 19th century through World War I and the early 1930s. The New York Daily News of the time called it “ a magnificent achievement…with drama, pathos, tenderness and thrill.” Variety called it “ a dignified and beautiful spectacle…a big, brave and beautiful picture.”
