As the pyramid scheme that was the U.S. mortgage system collapsed from bad debts and predatory lending, the American dream – a house, a yard, a home – has been foreclosed upon. Winner of the CINE Golden Eagle, the Chris Award and Telly Awards in four categories, this timely documentary stands as an essential historical exposé of how it all went so wrong. Written and produced by Kevin Stocklin (formerly a Managing Director at BNP Paribas) and directed by Gary Gasgarth (NYU Film professor), We All Fall Down carefully lays out the dizzying complexities of the American financial system with clarity and concision. Their exhaustive approach adds up to a searing indictment of the epic greed and criminality that made it all possible. As one pundit quips, “This is a crime with literally thousands of fingerprints on the weapon.” The film includes interviews with top economists including Nouriel Roubini, Wall Street insiders, officials from the Federal Reserve, the FBI and local law enforcement, and homeowners across the United States.
Many of the stories presented are veritable chin-droppers, as the entire end-game of the mortgage lending machine became about throwing money at people, regardless of their ability to repay. When the bubble finally burst in the summer of 2008, trillions of dollars vanished. The catastrophic repercussions (including multiple failures of the world’s largest financial institutions) have left the United Statesmired in a crippling and enduring recession and deeply indebted to foreign nations. This film is essential to understanding the current crisis, as we continue our search for a way out of it. We All Fall Down has screened at the Vancouver International Film Festival, the Cleveland International Film Festival, the Boston International Film Festival, the Museumof American Financeand the Bauhaus/Dessau Foundation. Distributed by ICARUS FILMS, it is currently being used to teach economics, business, history and politics students worldwide.
Stands out as one of the clearest and most in-depth examinations of the financial crisis to date, providing a historical and insider perspective that has been absent from most media reports. It is invaluable for anyone who wants to truly understand how we got into this mess. Highly recommended.
